In 2009 the energy use per FTE increased compared to 2008 because of more reliable data on branches in Belgium, an increase of the energy use in our Belgian Data Centers, an increase of the degree days and an important increase in m²/FTE. The increase of m²/FTE is linked to organizational changes, largely due to AG Insurance (former Fortis Insurance Belgium) who does no longer belong to the scope.
There is however a decrease in energy use per m² due to a number of optimization measures such as LINGOT, Data Center Management, Wake On Lan, Holiday Clock regulation and HVAC regulation and specific energy-efficient investments such as high efficiency lighting and equipments, high temperature cooling, free cooling, insulation and sunlight protection, movement and crepuscular detectors.

In 2009 we noticed a slight reduction in road travel, a strong reduction in air travel and a slight increase of rail travel due to the organizational changes and thanks to a number of awareness actions to promote the use of audio-, video- and web-conferencing. In addition, action was taken nationally to reduce the footprint of both business travel and commuting to work.
In Belgium a number of actions were taken to promote cycling: an active participation in the Bike To Work program, the provision of service bikes in 4 corporate buildings in Brussels and the introduction of a standard for adapted bicycle infrastructure for employees, customers and visitors.

Numerous measures were taken to reduce paper consumption, such as the replacement of individual printers by multifunctional devices, standard double-sided printing, electronic newsletters instead of hard copies, and fewer brochures. |

We continued to purchase Forest Stewardship Council (FSC mixed sources) copy/print paper in Belgium and Luxembourg in 2009. In Belgium we switched to 100% recycled paper (post-consumer) for the majority of client brochures and flyers end 2009.

BNP Paribas Fortis succeeded in reducing the amount of waste generated in 2009. In Belgium we continued our extensive waste segregation in the offices (paper, cardboard, plastic cups, drink recipients, toner cartridges, batteries).
Clauses related to reduction of packaging waste, take-back obligations and waste segregation are included in contracts.
