Environmental Management System
BNP Paribas Fortis, through its Facility Management & Procurement (FAP) – Sustainability Team, developed its own Corporate Environmental Management System (CEMS) in 2006, based on the ISO14001– an internationally recognised environmental management standard. The implementation of the CEMS, which began in 2007, was stepped up in 2008.
Procedures in Belgium were updated or established to comply with CEMS guidelines. Internal environmental audits of legal compliance and of compliance with CEMS guidelines and procedures were conducted at ten per cent of the corporate buildings in Belgium. Furthermore, FAP Sustainability organised practicebased environmental training sessions in Belgium, at which the CEMS and relevant guidelines, procedures, documents, and business and job-related tools were explained to guideline implementers, building (site) managers, branch site managers, local site managers, (main) contractors and relevant staff of other businesses.
Certifications
Bureau Veritas Certification successfully conducted the ISO14001certification audit of the CEMS in December 2008 and February 2009.
Furthermore, the ‘Ecodynamic Company’ label awarded to BNP Paribas Fortis’ in 2006 by the Brussels Institute for Environmental Management was renewed end 2009 for another period of 3 years. The new label is valid until November 2012.

“Although it is a new system, the corporate environmental management system (CEMS) has already reached a surprising state of maturity. It is available and ready for many other buildings in the group. We would like to congratulate the company on the many systems they already have in place for reducing the use of energy, as well as for the detailed collection of data that will help them to make an effective analysis and take well-considered actions wherever possible". The influence of sustainability on the purchasing process is also very good, as are the efforts made to tackle mobility issues and paper usage.”
